About me

I design software systems, developer platforms, and educational technologies that make software easier to build, teach, and maintain. My career spans more than two decades of professional software development alongside leadership in higher education, where I've developed curricula, authored textbooks and publications, and built tools that improve the software engineering learning experience. My work spans modern backend development with .NET Core and Java, API design, distributed systems, authentication and identity, DevOps automation, virtualization, AI-assisted software engineering, and cloud-native development.

Today I serve as a Computer Science and Software Engineering professor at West Virginia University at Parkersburg, where I focus on bringing real-world engineering practices into the classroom. Rather than teaching technology in isolation, I build production-style learning environments that expose students to modern software architecture, CI/CD pipelines, Linux infrastructure, networking, cybersecurity, virtualization, and AI-powered development workflows. Many of these projects include custom tooling that provides students with immediate feedback while reducing instructional overhead, blending software engineering with practical educational technology.

Beyond teaching, I continue to design and build software systems, developer tools, and infrastructure projects. Recent work includes a configurable Java assessment platform, AI development environments built on self-hosted infrastructure, modern REST APIs using OAuth2 and OpenID Connect, containerized development platforms, and high-availability virtualization environments based on Proxmox and Ceph.

I have also founded my own independent software company focused on developer tools, educational technology, and software engineering utilities, Zenic Systems, LLC.

I am also the author of an open educational textbook on object-oriented programming in Java and have published articles on cultivating entrepreneurial mindset in higher education. From 2023–2025 I served as WVU Parkersburg's inaugural Distinguished Chair of Entrepreneurship, leading initiatives that integrated entrepreneurial thinking across academic programs. In 2025 I was honored to receive the Bernard P. McDonough Faculty of the Year award.

Whether I'm designing software platforms, mentoring engineers and students, or speaking about software architecture and AI-assisted development, I'm motivated by building systems that make other developers more effective.
